Miss Grand International 2015 – Second Runner-up, Vartika Singh from the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh has been appointed to represent India at the biggest and most prestigious international beauty pageant in the world – the Miss Universe pageant scheduled to take place in coming months. Vartika has been handpicked by the Miss Diva organization – the parent organization of Miss Diva pageant that sends its winner to Miss Universe competition, to represent India at this year’s Miss Universe pageant, as there will be no Miss Diva 2019 pageant this year. The reason for discontinuing the Miss Diva competition for the year 2019 and appointing a former international beauty pageant candidate as the Indian representative to Miss Universe 2019 pageant is still not clear.
Vartika was appointed Miss Universe India 2019 / Miss Diva Universe 2019 at a press conference held at Rocky Star Cocktail Bar on September 26, 2019 in Mumbai. This is for the very first time in the history of India pageantry that instead of a winner, a handpicked candidate is being sent to represent India at the world’s most respected international beauty pageant – Miss Universe. Vartika is no stranger to the world of beauty pageants. She had already participated in 2 national beauty pageants and 1 international beauty pageant in earlier years. Perhaps, Vartika’s this experience might prove useful this year.
India has been participating in the Miss Universe pageant since the pageant began in the year 1952. In the year 1952, Miss India winner, Indrani Rahman represented India at the inaugural edition of Miss Universe pageant that was held in USA. India has won Miss Universe crown twice (1994 and 2000). Bollywood superstars, Sushmita Sen and Lara Dutta won Miss Universe crowns for India prior to entering Bollywood. In recent years, India has been getting no placement at Miss Universe pageant. The last Indian representative to enter the semi-finals of Miss Universe pageant was Noyonita Lodh in the year 2014. After that, there has been no Indian beauty who could manage to get a placement at the world’s biggest international beauty pageant. Will Vartika Singh end India’s drought of non-placement at Miss Universe this year? We all shall find that out soon. We congratulate Vartika for getting another chance to represent India internationally and wish her all the very best.
